What are the benefits to having driveway gates?

A driveway gate is an excellent way to keep your front yard clean for homeowners. They help protect your home from stray objects entering your yard. For businesses, installing a driveway gate is an excellent way to control access to your business property at certain hours, and only to people with the proper security access levels. If you live in a highly desirable area where parking is limited like near a stadium, you might need a driveway gate to prevent sports fans or concert goers from trying to park in your areas. The most common driveway gates use a spring mechanism to open and close, but some are motorized and open and close automatically, thus making it very easy to operate them from the comfort of your car.

Tips for driveway gate installation

Envision how the gate will look fully open so no uneven ground or objects would obstruct it from operating correctly like trees. You will also have to think about the size of vehicles that may come through the gate, such as perhaps in the future if a large truck will be needed, any kind of construction machinery, or a shuttle service. Some counties also require a minimum 14 foot opening to allow emergency responders clearance, so it’s always good to double check these kinds of things when you’re interested in a driveway gate.

You may also get a discount on home insurance because of the added security you’re investing in your home, while also just flat out adding value to the home itself. Is it worth installing an automatic gate?

As the name suggests, Automatic gate systems are a method of electronically detecting and reacting to objects or people. A sensor is placed at the top of the gate in an automatic gate system, and a control panel contains the software necessary to detect the sensor and react accordingly. The best thing about many automatic gates is that they are self-operating, so you don’t have to worry about someone opening your gate manually. All you have to do is set up the method with which the gate will open, and never have to worry about it again.

Components of a Wood Fence

Get Your Free Fence Quote Today!

Making barriers between two different areas has been a goal of human civilizations as long as they’ve existed. And collectively we’ve settled on one great solution as the delimiter indication, the humble wood fence. A wood fence is the most commonly used method to form a barricade, and/or physically show property lines. However, there can be a wide selection of wood fence types and styles, and understanding the benefits of each is important when making a selection. With that in mind, if you are planning to install a wood fence in your backyard, you might want to take a look and understand first the components and elements of a wood fence. Knowing the basics will help you choose the right wood fence for your home. To help you with your decision, here is our helpful guide to give you a deeper understanding of wood fence components.

PARTS OF A FENCE

Let’s start with the basics. Technically, a typical wood fence only consists of its three (3) main elements, and they are the following:

1. Posts

The posts serve as the foundation of a wood fence. Its purpose is to support the other fence pieces. A post needs to stand up vertically firm on the ground to hold the fence components. When installing your wood fence, make sure that your posts are solid and sturdy, because these pieces are like the anchors that create your fence’s overall resilience.

The post of a wood fence usually ranges from 4×4 or 6×6 wood lumber. However, the height and size of your wood fence post would still depend on your choice and liking.

NOTE: Keep in mind that a fence made out of wood needs to be checked and maintained over time. There can be pests like termites that invade your wood fence and can gradually eat and slowly damage the wood.

2. Rails

Rails are also known as the backer rails or fence railing. It is usually placed horizontally or in a fence plank connecting to each post on your wooden fence boards. Usually, you will need at least two or three fence railings. The total number of railings will depend on the height of the wood fence you want. Depending on the design and type of fence they can be stacked more closely together, or with large space between them. The standard design will have one railing near the top, one near the bottom, and one in the middle so your fence pickets stay stable.

For your rails, you will want lumber wood with an estimated thickness of 1-1/2 inches.

3. Pickets

In completing the building of your wooden fence, pickets are an essential part. Pickets serve as the main body of your wooden fence, and are what most people think of when they envision a fence in their mind. At this stage in construction, wooden fence boards are needed to complete your fence.

Pickets vary in style, and the different wood material needed for them also come with different thickness, hardness, color, and patterns. However, most buyers opt for a thickness of 5/8 inches picket wood, and the dog ear fence style is one of the most popular. Still, it is vital to check and ensure the accurate measurement of your planned wood fence before buying materials.

Popular Fence Styles

Pickets are the part of your wooden fence that will be most visible to everyone. In that case, you may want to have some interesting designs and style. However, if you are still making up your mind about what style you would choose for your wooden fence pickets, here is a list of popular fence styles:

  • Angled
  • Dog Ear
  • Flat Top
  • French Gothic
  • Scalloped
  • Lattice Top

Those are the three main parts of a fence. Still, you may want to customize your fence further beyond the basic components.

We also listed below some additional fence parts that you may want to put on your wood fence project.

Decorative Gates

Gates can be a classy way to help you secure your backyard, add easy access to and from backyards and frontwards, plus add a classy finished look to the fence.

Hinges

If you plan to put a gate on your wooden fence, you will need some hinges. Hinges are required to connect the entrance to your fence’s post. The best hinges for a wooden fence gate are the T-hinges.

Latch

Gates are made to secure your property. Thus you will need a latch to close and secure your dangling gates.

As we all know, wood is the primary material of a fence. However, if you want to be more stylish, you can go for something unique than wood. An alternative way to build your wooden fence instead of using wood is to opt for vinyl. Vinyl will let you explore from its wide selection of styles and colors, and vinyl is said to require lesser maintenance than wood. However, vinyl can cost a lot of your budget than wood.

WOOD FENCE, WHAT IS IT GOOD FOR?

If you are thinking of putting up a wood fence, what exactly are the benefits?

Safety

By far, this is the primary purpose of a wooden fence or any fence. Privacy and safety are things that a family wants in their house, especially if kids and pets are around. If you are planning to build a fence for your family’s safety, make sure to choose firm and sturdy materials that will last a long time.

Gardening

You can also add to the design of a garden with certain fence types and secure the garden from rampaging dogs sprinting all over your flowers.

Pool Area

Pool safety is important if you have a pool in your backyard. It’s also important to keep critters and larger animals out of your pool water, so having a fence and barrier around your pool is never a bad idea.

Building a Fence on Uneven Ground

Get Your Free Fence Quote Today!

Building a fence on uneven ground has some unique challenges, which is why hiring a professional is often the best way to proceed. If this is the situation that you find yourself in it may be time to call a professional for advice. There are a few approaches that you can take if you need a backyard fence on a slope, and one of our experts would be happy to go over them with you. The most common options are level topped fences, stepped fences, or racked fences. Any of these types of fences should serve your needs, so it’s usually a matter of what suits your house and yard the best. The one thing to keep in mind is that when building a fence on uneven ground there are some additional things to consider. Slopes add to the complexity of building a fence, and unless it’s built in the right way there may be issues with the longevity of a fence. A well-built fence is an investment that will add value to your home, which is why doing it right the first time to make it last is the smartest move.

Building On Uneven Ground Presents Unique Challenges

When you first start considering installing a fence in your front yard or back yard you might think of that perfect picket fence on flat ground. Well, while many houses do have flat yards and ground, Georgia is notoriously hilly in some spots and has plenty of bumps and slopes throughout many home’s yards. Luckily, there are a few tried and true techniques available to deal with uneven ground for fence installation, and we have plenty of hands on experience with all of these.

Level Topped Fence

Did you know that you can keep a fence level even when you are building it on uneven ground? This type of fence can be built if you have ground that doesn’t slope, but instead dips and rises. How do we do this? It’s actually a lot less complicated than it might sound, although there is quite a bit of work involved. The first step in building a level topped fence on uneven ground is to even the ground up. We do this by using soil to fill in uneven parts. For larger dips, we may use gravel and then soil on top. While it’s not the most complicated process, it’s important to remember that it involves hard work, and the soil and gravel have to be properly leveled for your fence to remain structurally sound.

Though this is only one approach to an uneven ground fence.

Stepped Fence

When you have a very steep fence line you have a few options when deciding what type of fence to have installed. Installing a standard fence isn’t a good fit in this situation since it results in a heavily sloped fence. Leveling the ground isn’t an option either because it’s impractical when you have a yard that has a steep slope that goes on for a good distance. That leaves you with a stepped fence. What is a stepped fence? A stepped fence is exactly what it sounds like, it’s a fence that has a series of panels that are arranged in steps. Now, while a stepped fence can be a great option for a sloped lawn, there is a significant drawback. A stepped fence has triangular openings at the bottom. These openings can allow pets and small children to squeeze through. Fortunately, this can often be fixed by adjusting the landscaping to fill in the gaps with dirt or other material.

The stepped fence is a classy looking fence that goes with many types of homes. It’s definitely an elegant solution to a sloping yard or landscape.

Racked Fence

A racked fence differs from traditional fencing in that the sections of the fence are installed in a specialized type of fence that adhere to the slope of the land. Typically aluminum material fences are the most easily rackable which allows flexibility in how a fence slopes with the ground. Standard aluminum fences can vary up to 6 inches for a slight slope, but specialized “racking” fence posts can vary 20 inches or 36 inches to suit more dramatic slopes. This allows each segment of the fence to be positioned at the optimal angle and align perfectly with no gaps between the bottom of the fence and the ground. A racked fence gives builders a lot of flexibility allowing us to create a fence for just about any type of yard, no matter how uneven the terrain. You might think of some rails on an outdoor stairway as a type of rackable fence.

A Combination of Techniques for Fences on Uneven Ground

There are a few different options to choose from, but many times the best way to solve the extremely varied and unique yards out there is a combination of techniques. Filling in some areas for a level-topped fence while adding a section of racked fence for more dramatic slopes isn’t uncommon. The end goal is to fence the entire yard, regardless of obstacles and uneven ground.

We Can Build A Custom Fence For Any Yard

Essentially, one of the best options you can make is to choose one of the best types of dog fences. If you have a dog who loves to tug on its leash or hurriedly scamper to neighbors it might be alarming if they got out.

Consequently, getting dog fences ensures double protection and added safety for your pet dogs, and for people who may be afraid of dogs. Remember, every breed of dog has different needs, sizes, and behaviors. Before installing a dog fence, get to know dog’s breed and match the best material for a dog fence for their temperament and energy levels.

IS YOUR DOG FENCE MADE WITH THE BEST MATERIAL?

As the saying goes, “Dogs are people’s best friend.” Essentially, that buildup of friendship and trust between the pet owner and dog requires a certain level of care and attention. As such, getting dog fences is one of the best choices any pet owner can make for the safety of their happy dog friends who just want to run around. If you have a high-energy dog that loves to run in the yard or dash to the front door at any sign of it opening, getting a fence built ensures safety for your furry friends without compromising their freedom to run and play in your yard.

BENEFITS OF GETTING A DOG FENCE

Thinking of getting a dog fence installed means taking a lot into consideration. For example, what fence types fit perfectly for your pet dog or if your dogs will react positively when they are contained in a fence. As such, here are some of the benefits you might see after getting a fence for your dog.

Benefits:

· Dog fences ensure extra protection for your dogs without compromising their freedom to play and exercise in your backyard.

· Your dogs can’t escape making a quick run into the neighborhood in which they might be in danger or knock down a stranger.

· Dog fences come with a variety of materials that can perfectly match the breed of dog and their behavior.

· The fence can be used for more than just protecting your dog, but can serve as a privacy fence as well.

TYPES OF MATERIALS FOR DOG FENCES

Depending on the breed, size, and nature of your dog, these different materials for dog fences match the personality and needs of your furry friends. Before getting a dog fence installed, learn about each of these types if it suits and protects the overall traits of your dogs. Check out some of the best fences for dogs.

CHAIN LINK MATERIAL

One of the most durable and cost-effective fence types for dogs is made of chain-links. If you have a spacious backyard and need a lot of fencing for your pet dogs, opting to choose the chain-link material can save you money. The most common sizes range from three feet up to six feet. Now, if you need a higher fence, you can request for sizes ranging from eight feet and up.

Essentially, chain link dog fences are not the most attractive dog fencing option if you want to at least beautify your backyard. This dog fence looks commercial and basic. Now, if you want to amplify your chain link dog fence, there are options to dress up residential chain links. You can choose to add vinyl coating which softens the look and adds vibrancy to your dog fence.

METAL FENCES

As elegant and classy as it looks, metal dog fences are also one of your best options. Now, before considering getting one, make sure that your dog won’t be able to get through the openings between metal fence posts. Smaller or even some medium sized dogs can wriggle through or get their heads stuck in the thin pickets space in between your metal fencing. Essentially, if you have bigger dogs, they may be able to climb a chain link fence, or chew on parts of a wood fence. Installing a metal dog fence ensures that larger breeds of dogs can’t chew the material or escape from the yard. Also, this is a useful solution if you own breeds of dogs who love to dig in the ground.

WOOD DOG FENCES

Wood dog fences offer useful benefits for pet dog owners. One of which is that a solidly built wooden fence can protect dogs who are exceptionally strong and heavy since they won’t be able to knock the fence over with their body weight. Another useful benefit is that a wood dog fence blocks your dog’s view of the neighboring street or neighbor’s backyard. So when another dog passes by or a stranger walks by, your pet dog won’t go nuts barking or attempt to get outside the fences.

VINYL FENCES

Vinyl dog fences offer extreme durability and a cost-effective fencing option for dog pet owners. Essentially, vinyl dog fences have a smooth surface wherein dogs will not be able to climb over and sneak out. Unlike wood, vinyl fences won’t rot or decay in the long run. Even after many years of having this type of dog fence, it will remain durable and strong. Now, if you have bigger breeds of dogs, make sure that you constantly maintain and check your vinyl dog fences. These fences can crack or become brittle from the force of bigger dogs if they crash into them.

Metal Fences: A Guide to Picking the Best Metal Fence

When you decide to fence your yard, or replace an existing fence there are many considerations to be made. You have to go through the length of the fence around your yard, the material, style, and overall quality that will impact your home value and curb appeal.

And if you have a homeowners’ association there might be fence rules and regulations you will have to follow around the size, height, material, and style. We’re here to help you understand a popular fence material that is durable, and comes in different materials and layouts. That’s the metal fence for a front yard or back yard that is a classic choice of homeowners.

Types of Metal Fence Materials

The different materials of metal fences has a long history as an alternative to wood fences. The most popular metal fence materials are wrought iron fences, steel and aluminum.

Wrought Iron Fences

Wrought iron fences is a heavy-duty fence that also has a sense of elegant and decorative style that is long lasting. Strolling through many neighborhoods and areas of Atlanta will reveal wrought iron fences as the chosen material. Typically wrought iron fences have a powder coat to protect it from the elements and has a heat applied finish that makes it more durable than regular paint.

If the powder coating is scratched or marred in any way, however, the iron will begin to rust. This makes repainting the fence every year or two a good choice to maintain the integrity of your iron fence.

Pros of wrought iron are it’s strong and durable, has the ability to take on customizable designs and the classic appearance.

Cons of wrought iron are that they require regular maintenance to ward off rust. Iron is very heavy and is more difficult to work with.

Modern Metal Fencing

The majority of ornamental metal fences are made of tubular steel or tubular aluminum. These types of metal fences can be machined in a factory then installed at the home easily. The metal posts, rails and pickets are hollow so they are lighter and can be transported more easily. These drive the production and labor costs down so they can be sold at comparable prices

Steel tubular fence

Steel can be bent into hollow pickets, rails and posts, which are welded together and screwed into posts. Tubular fencing is the most common type of metal fence since it costs less to produce and is more light weight so it’s easier to work with.

Pros of steel are that it’s strong enough to have 8 foot long panels and fewer posts.

Cons are that steel is susceptible to scratching and rusting.

Aluminum Fences

Aluminum fences are shaped similarly to steel fences and preassembled into panels or pieces so they’re easier to install. Though similar to steel they have many advantages. Aluminum won’t rust or corrode, so this is the best choice for homes in coastal areas or near bodies of water. However, aluminum isn’t as strong as iron.

Pros of aluminum fences are that it is less expensive, and can be sloped to accommodate uneven terrain.

Cons of aluminum are the lesser strength as compared to iron, and it can be easier to dent than an iron fence.

Chain-link Fencing

Chain link isn’t as popular as it used to be, but you’ll still see plenty of chain link fences around town. That’s because they are quite durable and long lasting. They’re made out of galvanized steel wire, which makes them more resistant to corrosion and rust. Chain-link fences are also cheaper than other fence types and are very easy to install.

However, they don’t provide as high level of security as other fences, and are pretty easy for animals and people to climb. If the look of a chain-link fence isn’t your style you can always have vinyl coated chain link which come in black and green.

Pros of chain link fences are they require very little maintenance

Cons of chain link fences are they don’t fit with many homes aesthetics and are not permitted by many homeowners’ associations.

Solid steel fence

Solid steel fences, as compared to tubular fences, are much heavier which also makes them stronger and more durable. That’s why when security is of the utmost importance solid steel is the choice of many commercial and residential property owners.

Pros of solid steel are the near impossible to damage properties, as well as the ability to accommodate sloping yards.

Cons are the heaviness which can require machinery to hoist into place, and it also requires consistent maintenance.

Metal Fence Maintenance Requirements

Part of owning a metal fence is maintaining it to last for years to come. Similarly to how different wood fences age uniquely, fence materials react differently to different climates.

Aluminum Fence Maintenance

For aluminum there really isn’t much maintenance required, but you should keep a keen eye for dulling or oxidizing. These look like white, powdery areas on the fence, and a finish that no longer shines. In this case you can wash the aluminum fence with soap and water, then coat it with automotive wax to create a barrier against the elements and restore the original luster.

Iron, Steel or Chain-link Fence Maintenance

Bare iron and steel corrode when they are exposed to air and water, and if salt is in the mix you will see rust appear even faster. However, newly installed fences are primed and painted to prevent this kind of damage. In order to maintain the integrity of a metal fence you should just wash the fence with soap and water twice a year, and oil any latches and springs with mineral oil. You can also use steel wool to buff scratches or signs of rust, and neutralize them with lemon juice and vinegar. After that you should touch up these areas afterwards with a matching rust resistant paint.

If you have a damaged metal fence or rusted metal fence you should remove or clean any overgrowth which can trap moisture. As long as the fence hasn’t been neglected for decades, and it’s simply a thin rust layer on the surface, you shouldn’t need any heavy duty equipment to remove the rust from your fence.

A wire brush can gently remove surface rust from flat areas, and on corners or decorative elements an abrasive material like black sandpaper can be used. To restore the fence it’s important to clean the metal, then prime the fence with an oil based primer formulate for metal. After the fence is primed using an oil based paint will help ward off future rust.

What is the best metal fencing?

The best metal fence is different for different houses or commercial properties, and the overall budget requirements. Tubular steel fences are a great option for most homes, but this might not be secure enough for others. If there is constant harsh weather with gusts of salty water then aluminum will be the best fence for its corrosion resistance. And if a wrought iron fence look is what is in style in your neighborhood this could be the best fence for you.

At the end of the day it comes down to personal taste, and requirements of the fence for your property. We can help guide and give advice on which fences work best since we have over 60 years experience installing fences in the Atlanta area.

Proper Installation for a Metal Fence

If you decide on steel, aluminum or wrought iron you’ll have to get the proper installation to make the fence last. If you have to install the fence on a sloped landscape it’s important to have an experienced fence installation professional line up the fence for a smooth appearance. How to Pick a Fence that Withstands High Winds

Get Your Free Fence Quote Today!

Georgia gets pretty windy from time to time, and there may be the occasional tropical storm or hurricane that scrapes by the coast every once in a while. And if you have a weakly installed fence all it takes is one instance of powerful winds to blow the wood over. So how do you pick a fence that will withstand high winds if your area is prone to stronger gusts?

Best Fence for Windy Areas

The most apparent answer to how to prevent wind from being damaged in high winds is having one with a design that allows wind to flow through the fence. However, in the case that you want a privacy fence it may not be the most ideal solution, so you can find a balance between privacy and wind resistance. Or reinforce the fence to withstand the high winds.

The best type of fence that can withstand the wind is a wire mesh fence, or a chain link type of fence. There are plenty of openings in the wire mesh that allow wind to blow through, while also being sturdy and rigid to serve as a proper fence. They also come in a number of styles to suit your design needs. If you want the best fence for extremely windy areas this is probably the one you’ll want to go with if it fits with your stylistic vision.

However, if you’re looking for a wooden fence rather than a wire fence you may be asking yourself what is the best wood fence for windy areas?

Best Wood Fence for High Winds

There are a few types of fences that can handle higher winds such as a picket fence with spaces in between. That is if privacy is of no concern with regards to the fence. A trellis style fence or lattice fence is similar to the wire mesh fencing in that it allows wind to blow through openings and has a similar styling, except it’s made of wood.

The trellis fence type is perfect for dissipating wind pressure that comes with high wind. You can even reinforce the fence with concrete posts or use the trellis as a topper for a different style of fence rather than a full height panel.

Wind proof fence

The best way to achieve a windproof type of fence is through having the kinds that let wind pass through combined with proper installation and reinforced posts with concrete, or having concrete fence posts instead of wooden ones. Proper installation means your fence posts are deep enough to withstand high winds, providing better stability. The general rule is having a post length of 3 feet anchored underground.

More Wind Resistant Fence Deesigns

Slatted Fence Panels

Aside from chain link fences and trellis fences slatted fence panels also work as a balance between wind resistance and privacy. These are horizontal boards fixed in rows with small gaps between the boards which allows wind to pass through. These offer a contemporary look with more privacy than other types of wind resistance fences, so they are the ideal privacy fence for high wind areas.

Hit & Miss Fence Panels

The hit and miss fencing style has boards that alternate on different sides of the panel, providing spacing in between each board. The overall look when facing the fence appears to be solid, but the gaps between the boards give it good wind resistance since it can blow through more easily. You can also opt to have a trellis fence type of boarding on top to add some style. However, though they provide some additional protection versus wind the gaps aren’t that substantial so they aren’t ideal for more powerful wind.

Best Wood Fence for High Wind

Cedar wood is a common hardwood that stands up well to wind. This type of wood is known for its strength and durability, so combined with proper fence installation in a windy area and the right design you will have a good fence for any weather.

Iron Fences for Strong Winds

Iron fences or wrought iron fences are good for strong winds because the designs have narrow staggered bars that don’t provide much for wind to catch on. These types of fences rarely get damaged by strong winds, plus iron has great strength and durability naturally.

Steel fences are also among the strongest fences available, so they also perform extremely well in high wind areas.

Securing Loose Objects for Storm Proof Fencing

Though you can have the best windproof fence possible if a sizable object flies into it during heavy winds and storms there’s not much that can be done. So in the case of the wind picking up speed or during a tropical storm or hurricane it’s best to store lawn chairs, barbecues or other large items to stop them from bashing into fences and other things. If they are too big to move they can also be secured to the ground with stakes or bungee cords.

Trees can also be hazardous if they aren’t properly trimmed. Overhanging branches can fall and crush a fence, or if the tree is weak or diseased it can fall and do some damage to your fence, or your car or house depending on the location of the tree.

Maintaining a Fence for Long Term Windproofing

Fences need maintenance just like anything else in life. Though we do our best to have high quality, durable, and long lasting materials, finishes and styles, there will always come a time when maintenance is needed. Checking for any loose boards, posts or panels is a good step, and replacing any of these promptly. Washing any mold that might be growing on it and spraying weed or insect repellant to ward off bugs or critters is another way to maintain a fence. If your fence isn’t already sealed and stained, it’s a good idea to get this done within a year of installation. Wood stains help protect a fence from the suns rays and waterproof the wood to repel water. They also help prevent cracking, splitting and protect the natural color of the wood.

Hurricane proof privacy fence

We don’t have to worry about hurricanes often, and if they come to the coast of Georgia they will usually weaken the storm by the time it’s in reach of Atlanta. However, hurricane winds may happen every once in a while, so is there a way to get a truly hurricane proof fence?

Preparing for the storm you can simply add hurricane straps to reinforce it, or single braces with stakes driven into the ground for added reinforcement. It’s also important to remove any signs that can catch wind and weaken the stakes. Bracing any gates in the open position so the wind can go through the opening rather than pushing against the fence. The most important factor though will be during the installation of the fence. Using steel or concrete posts that are set 3 feet deep and no more than 7 feet apart during installation will make for the most secure fences you can have.

Picking a Fence that withstands High Winds

Ultimately you’ll have to survey the risks of high winds in your area, and how realistically you’ll need wind proof fence designs and installation. We get a few windy storms from time to time in Atlanta, so you will have to use your best judgment on the level of windproofed fence you’ll get for your home.
